picture-620.jpg I really wish I could get my camera to work better. I cannot figure out to get the pictures to be brighter. When the flash is on, the pictures turn out white. I believe if you click on the pictures, you can see an up close and better visual than is here. Anyway, last week I spent a few days making cards and this is what I made. I really had a lot of fun. My neighbor taught me how to do Iris Fold which is the heart and the horse cards. It was a lot of fun. I printed off a lot of the patterns from here http://www.irisfolding.circleofcrafters.com/. You can learn how to Iris Fold here as well if you are interested in taking up a new hobby. Well, I suppose I better get supper ready and plan for school tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a better school day tomorrow than it was today.

Show and Tell Friday August 24, 2007

show-and-tell.jpg

I didn’t think I was going to have anything to show this Friday for show and tell until I checked my mail this afternoon. A blogger friend of mine made me my very own and very first apron ever. I know some of you may be thinking “big deal” “so it’s an apron”, but it is a big deal to me because I have never had one. Not only can I use this for cooking, baking and gardening, but I can use it as a bib to! Don’t laugh Jodi….. my sister says I need a bib because there are not to many times that go by with me eating that I don’t get something on my shirt. I wish I had the ability to sew and do things like this. It is so beautiful. I had to get my son  to model it for you so that you could see it. He was not to happy about this. He He

 Here it is.

picture-616.jpgpicture-619.jpgThis is the pattern on it. My favorite color is pink. I think this is so beautiful and I thank you so so so much for it Amy. Visit Amy’s blog at http://trainachild.blogspot.com/ for some great reading, training, and just to get to know her. She is a fanominal woman.

Hop, skip or jump over to Kelli’s blog and see all the other cool and precious items others are showing. Here is the link….

School fun! August 23, 2007

picture-606.jpg

We have officially started school  three days a go. The first day did not go so well. We got a few things done but just settling in was fine with me. The next two days went much better. I have to admit it is hard getting in the swing of things with 4 children to teach and a house to keep up but it will get easier. The kids are actually coming to me and wanting to do school. This morning I told Dylan to get up so we could do school and I don’t think I have ever seen him jump out of bed so fast. You would have thought I told him we were having donuts for breakfast or something. That he would jump out of bed for! Their enthusiasm for school work will be short lived but I am thanking God for answered prayers. It makes my job a whole lot easier.  Today we talked about portraits and the kids drew one. They got to use oil pastels for the first time. Well, I am tired and want a little more sleep tonight so I am off to bed.

You know that horribly expensive stuff at the store that kids love to play with…… I found a recipe for it.

Ingredients

1 Tbs. Borax

1-cup water

1/4 cup white glue

1 zip lock bag

Food coloring (optional)

Styrofoam beads (Wal-Mart)

 1. Dissolve 1 Tbs. Borax completely in 1-cup water.

2. In a seperate bowl mix 1/4 cup white glue and 1/4 cup water.

3. Mix equal parts of Borax solution to equal parts of glue solution in zip lock bag (1/2 cup of each=1 cup of “floam” or w/o beads “slime”

4. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want.

5. Seal bag and knead by hand.

6. Add styrofoam beads to mixture to make “floam”.

Sandra  felt as low as the heels of her shoes when she pulled open the florist shop  door, against a November gust of wind. Her life had been as sweet as a spring  breeze and then, in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a “minor”  automobile accident stole her joy.

This was Thanksgiving week and the  time she should have delivered their infant son. She grieved over their loss.  Troubles had multiplied.  Her husband’s company “threatened” to transfer  his job to a new location. Her sister had called to say that she could not  come for her long awaited holiday visit. What’s worse, Sandra’s friend  suggested that Sandra’s grief was a God-given path to maturity that would  allow her to empathize with others who suffer. “She has no idea what I’m  feeling,” thought Sandra with a shudder.

“Thanksgiving?  Thankful for what?” she wondered. “For a careless driver whose truck was  hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life,  but took her child’s?”

“Good afternoon, can I help you?” Sandra was  startled by the approach of the shop clerk.  ”I. . .I need an  arrangement,” stammered Sandra.  ”For Thanksgiving?  I’m convinced  that flowers tell stories,” she continued.

“Are you looking for something that  conveys ‘gratitude’ this Thanksgiving?”  ”Not exactly!” Sandra  blurted out. “In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone  wrong.”  Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the clerk  said, “I have the perfect arrangement for you.”

Then the bell on the  door rang, and the clerk greeted the new customer, “Hi, Barbara, let me  get your order.” She excused herself and walked back to a small workroom,  then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery,  bows, and what appeared to be long-stemmed thorny roses.   Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped:  there were  no flowers.

“Do you want these in a box?” asked the clerk. Sandra  watched  was this a joke?  Who would want rose stems with no flowers!  She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. “Yes, please,” Barbara  replied with an appreciative smile. “You’d think after three years of getting  the special, I wouldn’t be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it  right here, all over again,” she said, as she gently tapped her  chest.

Sandra stammered, “Ah, that lady just left with, uh. . .She left  with no flowers!”  ”That’s right, said the clerk. “I cut off the  flowers. That’s the ‘Special.’ I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns  Bouquet.

Barbara came into the shop three years ago, feeling much as you  do today,” explained the clerk. “She thought she had very little to be  thankful for.  She had just lost her father to cancer; the family  business was failing; her son had gotten into drugs; and she was facing major  surgery.”

“That same year I had lost my husband,” continued the clerk.  ”For the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no  children, no husband, no family nearby, and too much debt to allow any  travel.”

“So what did you do?” asked Sandra.  ”I learned to be  thankful for thorns,” answered the clerk quietly.  ”I’ve always thanked  God for the good things in my life and I never questioned Him why those good  things happened to me, but when the bad stuff hit, I cried out, “Why? Why  me?!” It took time for me to learn that the dark times are important to our  faith! I have always enjoyed the ‘flowers’ of my life, but it took the thorns  to show me the beauty of God’s comfort!  You know, the Bible says that  God comforts us when we’re afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to  comfort others.”

Sandra sucked in her breath, as she thought about what  her friend had tried to tell her. “I guess the truth is I don’t want  comfort.  I’ve lost a baby and I’m angry with God.”

Just  then someone else walked in the shop.

“Hey, Phil!” the clerk greeted the  balding, rotund man. “My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving  arrangement. . .twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!” laughed Phil as the clerk  handed him a tissue wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator.  ”Those  are for your wife?” asked Sandra incredulously. “Do you mind telling me why  she wants a bouquet that looks like that?”

“Four years ago, my wife and I  nearly divorced,” Phil replied.  ”After forty years, we were in a real  mess, but with the Lord’s grace and guidance, we trudged through problem after  problem. The Lord rescued our marriage.  Jenny here (the clerk) told  me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she had learned from  ”thorny” times. That was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems.  My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific “problem” and give  thanks for what that problem taught us.” As Phil paid the clerk, he said to  Sandra, “I highly recommend the Special!”

“I don’t know if I can be  thankful for the thorns in my life.” Sandra said to the clerk. “It’s all too.  . .fresh.”  ”Well,” the clerk replied carefully, “my experience has shown  me that the thorns make the roses more precious. We treasure God’s  providential care more during trouble than at any other time.  Remember  that it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don’t  resent the thorns.”

Tears rolled down Sandra’s cheeks. For the first  time since the accident, she loosened her grip on her resentment. “I’ll take  those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please,” she managed to choke out.

“I  hoped you would,” said the clerk gently. “I’ll have them ready in a minute.”  ”Thank you. What do I owe you?”  ”Nothing.  Nothing but a promise to  allow God to heal your heart.  The first year’s arrangement is always on  me.” The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra.  ”I’ll attach  this card to your arrangement, but maybe you would like to read it  first.”

It read:   My God, I have never thanked You for my thorns.  I have thanked You a thousand times for my roses, but never once for  my thorns.  Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value  of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to You along the path of  pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of Your rainbow look much  more brilliant.”

Praise  Him for the roses; thank Him for the thorns.  God Bless all of you.   Be thankful for all that the Lord does for you.

“Live  simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, leave the rest to  God.”

picture-573.jpg For some this may be gross but today Mia had her babies and I watched the whole thing. I thought it was so neat to be able to see. Here is one with the placenta still with it. She had 5 in all. The first three were black. Next one was black with some orange on it like momma and the last one was an orange one. She wasn’t that big during pregnancy so I was surprised when she passed 5 kittens! It is really neat seeing life being born.

picture-583.jpg I think there are 3 girls and 2 boys. picture-587.jpg Everything was a mess. One kitten came feet first and she had it hanging half way out so I assisted her a bit and pulled it the rest of the way out. It was really gross and neat at the same time. The water bag popped in my hands and it was all warm and gooey. I have changed the blanket she birthed on and she has cleaned up her babies really good. Now she is just getting her much needed rest. Just thought I would share my Friday with all of you. Have a great weekend.

picture-541.jpg Here are a ton of green beans that got picked from our garden. So far we have picked corn, some tomatoes, onions, a few peas, and zuccini. It is amazing to me that at the beginning of the season, we are so excited to get this garden planned and planted. The first couple of weeks go well and then when it starts to get hot or all the weeds start to come in, you can’t wait for it to be done and over with. That is kind of how I am now. Just human nature I guess. I love the fact that we have some great nutritious food coming to our table to eat and I thank the Lord every day for it but with the heat and the end of summer approaching, I am ready for the gardening to be done. Have you ever said to yourself “this is not how gardening is suppose to be”? There are not suppose to be weeds and tilling and everything else laborous that goes into gardening. I want the garden that Eve walked through every day. She didn’t have to sweat  and work to get her veggies. It’s not suppose to be this way. Makes me want to make up a list to take to heaven with me called “ten things I want to ask Eve” or tell Eve for that matter. What was she thinking!!!!  Anyway, beans have been blanched and put in the freezer for a future meal. We have eaten some already a few days ago from a previous picking. I made chicken fried rice for dinner and added the green beans to it. It was yummy! I have to get to bed. I don’t want to be falling asleep in church. Pastor is going through Genesis and it is really interesting. He is such an awesome speaker and I get so much from his sermons. For bible with the kids I am going to start with Genesis and go from there. The more I know, the better off the children will be knowledge wise. I will leave with a little information I looked up because I was curious. Here are the nutrional facts on green beans. I love to learn what kinds of vitamins are in certain fruits and veggies. I like to know what I am eating and what I am not eating enough of.

Snap beans, string beans, and pole beans are the immature pod and beans of dried legumes. All of these will mature to produce fat seeds and tough inedible pods. The nutritional profile of mature dried beans is very different from that of green beans. Green beans are a good source of carbohydrates. They are a great source of protein, dietary fiber, Vitamin C and beta carotene. The beta carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body. Green beans also contain small amounts of calcium and other trace nutrients.
